If I hear one more time from the Trump haters, “we can get a 3rd party candidate to beat him”, I think I will scream. Mind you, I have said all along, I am not some huge supporter of Donald Trump, but come on conservatives! Time to unite! And here is the reason why.
We will have to have a reformation of the presidential voting system for a 3rd party candidate to have a chance of winning. Right now, a candidate becomes the next president of the United States when he or she wins a majority, or 270 of the 538 electoral votes. So we are geared, at least right now, to a two-party system.
Secondly, who in the world, does anyone think could compete with Trump and Hillary at this point? There have been rumors of Erick Erickson, the Georgia-based conservative activist and radio host, or Bill Kristol, the editor of the Weekly Standard. And even Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse has been quite vocal and his name thrown into the mix. Oh, and hey, there is always Mark Cuban, who is further left than Trump! But, Never Trump, right?
The big problem is timing. Almost every state has a different set of rules for getting onto the ballot as an independent candidate, and most require registration fees, voter signatures, or possibly both! And it costs money…A LOT of money. That would be difficult to raise in a short time.
Finally, I can think of a more sinister scheme that some Republicans could be plotting. Could they be wanting just enough votes taken from Trump to give the election to Hillary? I mean, what better way to prove your point of what a “liberal” Trump is than by Hillary Clinton winning the election? It seems extreme, but then, I have never seen such “extreme” hatred for a man. I never even saw this much hate for Barack Obama from Republicans! It makes no sense, but that’s where we’re at.
Here is my gut feeling about Donald Trump. I don’t believe he is the brash, callous man that so many of the “sensitive” folk believe him to be. I think he knows how to play the media and beat them at their own game. And believe me, being in the media for 17 years, I know the power that it has to sway feelings and convictions. What if, just what if, you sat down with Donald Trump and he was the nicest guy you ever met? The truth is, “most” of his positions are conservative. Some, not so much. My question is, what did any of the Beltway Republicans do conservatively the past 8 years? I would say…not much.
Let’s get on board the Trump Train, folks. We know for sure, Hillary Clinton will seal our doom. Time is a wasting!
