South African Refugees: The Crisis the Left Won’t Talk About

May 14, 2025 by Arch Kennedy

I’ve been watching the refugee conversation heat up again—and not surprisingly, the loudest voices aren’t telling the full story. If you’ve missed it, let me fill you in. Right now, there’s a real refugee crisis involving South African refugees—families who are being targeted, attacked, and killed in South Africa, simply because of the color of their skin and the land they own. This has been going on for years, but it’s gaining attention again because more of these families are desperately seeking refuge.

As a Christian, I absolutely believe we should care about true refugees—people fleeing legitimate danger, persecution, and threats to their lives. But what I see playing out in our politics is a double standard. The left seems more interested in defending criminal illegal aliens than standing up for actual refugees like these South African families.

What Is a True Refugee?

Let’s start with some clarity. What is a true refugee?

According to U.S. immigration law, a refugee is someone who has a credible fear of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Source: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

That definition fits the situation in South Africa perfectly.
These farmers are being hunted down for their race.
Their land is being seized.
Their families are being terrorized—some even tortured and murdered.

And yet, the media barely mentions them. Meanwhile, politicians on the left are racing to protect illegal aliens flooding across our border—many of whom have no legitimate claim to asylum. Some even have criminal records, but they’re still welcomed as heroes in sanctuary cities across America.

It’s a double standard, and I believe Christians need to call it out.

Why the Left Stays Silent on South African Refugees

Let’s be real. If these refugees in South Africa were black, indigenous, or fit the left’s narrative of oppression, the media would be screaming about it. There would be hashtags, marches, and celebrity fundraisers.

But because these victims are white, Christian, and hardworking landowners, they get ignored—or worse, justified as part of “land justice.”

I’ve seen articles trying to spin this as some kind of payback for apartheid. That’s not justice. That’s racist violence. And the silence from the left speaks volumes.

If you don’t believe me, look up the story of the brutal murder of the Joubert family—a white Christian farming family slaughtered on their farm. You probably didn’t hear about it on CNN. Why? Because it doesn’t fit the political narrative.

True Refugees vs. Lawbreakers

Let me be clear—I fully support helping true refugees, like those in South Africa.
But what I can’t support is the deliberate blurring of the line between legitimate refugees and lawbreakers.

Illegal aliens who sneak across our borders, break U.S. law, and skip the asylum process are not refugees. They are lawbreakers. And yet, the left bends over backward to defend them—offering sanctuary, free benefits, and even taxpayer-funded legal defense in some cities.

Meanwhile, real refugees—like the South African farmers—can’t even get media coverage, much less political support.

It’s heartbreaking. And it’s wrong.

How Should Christians Respond?

I’ve had to wrestle with this myself. As a Christian, I want to have compassion. But I’ve learned that compassion without truth leads to compromise.

We are called to care for the oppressed and the persecuted—but we’re also called to stand for justice and truth.

Here’s what I believe that looks like:

  • Speak up for the true refugees in South Africa. Share their stories. Pray for their protection. Contact your representatives and ask them to advocate for legitimate asylum for these families.
  • Reject the media’s double standard. Don’t fall for emotional manipulation that paints lawbreakers as victims while real victims are ignored.
  • Stand for legal and moral clarity. Defending our borders and upholding immigration law isn’t un-Christian. In fact, it’s biblical to value order and justice (Romans 13:1-7).
  • Challenge the narrative. Don’t let political pressure silence you. Real refugees deserve real help, no matter what race they are—or whether it’s politically convenient to support them.

Closing Thoughts: Let’s Get Honest About Refugees

If we really care about refugees, we need to get honest about who they are and who they aren’t.

We need to stop letting political narratives define compassion.
We need to stop turning a blind eye to true persecution just because it doesn’t fit someone’s agenda.

As Christians, we are called to defend truth, stand for justice, and love without favoritism.

Let’s start by speaking up for the South African refugees who are being silenced and ignored.

Because every life matters to God—not just the ones that make headlines.
